DevOps Engineer, Operations Engineer, Automation Engineer, Cloud engineer

The post holder is responsible for the administration and management of a wide range of IT infrastructure within an operations team of engineers. The focus will be to maintain, troubleshoot and improve our systems with a strong emphasis on automation.

Key accountabilities:

* Use various monitoring tools to troubleshoot, triage and resolve live service issues across our estate
* Perform analysis on incidents and issues, identifying ways to permanently fix the root cause, or provide methods to streamline the recovery process
* Document incidents and steps taken to fix accurately, including detailed technical analysis of the fault and your steps to resolve it
* Provide clear communications to non-technical staff on the status and resolution of your work
* Create thorough and clear documentation on processes, systems and procedures used by the team
* Design, create and implement tooling (whether scripts or complex systems) to improve the effectiveness of yours' and the team's work
* Perform regular checks and tests on key systems
* Take ownership of projects handed over from build teams, and perform configuration changes following best practice
* Feedback on product and systems performance to project and development teams, using your operational knowledge to suggest improvements in architecture or scale

Essential skills

* A background in a systems administration or programming/development is essential.
* Solid user and administration experience with Atlassian stack (Confluence, Jira)
* Good understanding and application of web service administration (Apache / nginx / Tomcat) and experience supporting web applications
* Experience programming and developing web applications and micro services
* Version control system exposure (Git / SVN)
* Experience working with public cloud - eg AWS, Azure, Google Cloud
* Experience managing and configuring Jenkins and implementing pipelines
* Linux configuration and administration skills (RHEL/Ubuntu) and a good knowledge of system internals
* Experience working with virtualisation platforms, ideally VMWare
* Ability to manage and respond to monitor metrics and alerts, and use information from monitoring systems, log aggregation, and command-line diagnostics to resolve issues
* Able to script in Python, Bash, or similar languages, with a desire to develop coding skills further
* Experience with configuration management (Puppet / Chef / Ansible / Saltstack) to deploy and update configurations across multiple environments
* Able to work with multiple storage concepts - NFS / SMB / CIFS, RAID, LVM, and able to demonstrate knowledge of I/O metrics and their relevance
* Knowledge and operation of standard networking methods and protocols, including TCP/IP, VPN's, DNS, SMTP/IMAP/POP, HTTP/HTTPS, SSH & SFTP
* Database configuration and administration (MySQL, Postgres, NoSQL)
* Excellent communication skills with the ability to work as part of a team or individually as required
* Self-motivated & confident
* Excellent documentation skills with high attention to detail
* Ability to handle high pressure situations
