My Governmental Body client, based in Central London, is seeking to recruit a Data Engineering Specialist on an initial 6-month contract at a day rate of 500-600. You will be part of the community of the software development community and will contribute to professionalising the data engineering function.

You will join the department during a period of rapid expansion of our analytical capabilities, with a new Data Science team, and a new cloud-based Analytical Platform being built in-house in the cloud. This creates an opportunity to design and build a new approach to the management of analysts' data which will benefit the department for years to come. The development of the Analytical Platform is still in an early stage, resulting in an opportunity to design a truly modern approach to data engineering using new cloud-based infrastructure and coding tools.

You'll be leading development of our acclaimed open-source services, with user needs at the heart of everything, helping us transform Government for the future. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, you'll be helping define how we do what we do and making sure that our systems are built to be changed rapidly.

As a developer with a data engineering specialism you will design and build tools that will enable the client to make better use of data, improving decision making so that we deliver a better justice system for the public.

  • You will have demonstrable experience of developing reproducible ETL pipelines in code, using tools such as SQL, Python, Apache Spark, R, or similar.
  • You will be an experienced user of a version control system, preferably Git.
  • You will have experience working with semi-structured data sources and/or data from administrative or transactional systems and transforming this data into structures suitable for use by analysts and data scientists, or by BI
  • You will have an awareness of automated testing techniques, modern software deployment approaches and how cloud infrastructure is managed.

You will:

  1. Design processes to automatically transform data from existing operational systems and new digital services, to improve the accessibility of data, its structure, and its timeliness. This will build trust in our data across the department.
  2. Use modern software development practices to improve the maintainability, agility, reproducibility and quality of our data transformation pipelines, including building automated tests.
  3. Work closely with analysts and data scientists to understand user need, implementing data models which enabling them to work faster and generate more powerful insights.
  4. Transform government into a more agile organisation by helping to embed modern development practices
  5. Share knowledge of tools and techniques with the wider team and community
  6. Help build and maintain a diverse, inclusive culture across the development community, growing awareness, inclusivity, and balance
  7. Help with hiring, taking part in recruitment of data engineers and other related roles
  1. Challenge entrenched practices and influence decision makers, and look for deeper underlying problems to solve, and larger opportunities for digital transformation
